Newswise — Vienna, Austria—1 November 2016—The International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) held an issue panel this afternoon entitled, Emerging US Value Frameworks: Are There Lessons From – Or For – Europe? The session took place at the Society’s 19th Annual European Congress in Vienna, Austria.

The issue panel was moderated by Richard J. Willke, PhD, Chief Science Officer, ISPOR, Lawrenceville, NJ, USA. Speakers for the session included:- Peter J. Neumann, ScD, Professor and Director, Center for the Evaluation of Value and Risk in Health, Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies, Tufts University, Boston, MA, USA - Michael F. ISPOR is spearheading the Initiative on US Value Assessment Frameworks to inform the shift towards a value-driven health care system in the US by promoting the development and dissemination of high-quality, unbiased value assessment frameworks. A Special Task Force has been convened as part of the Initiative that will collaborate to produce a white paper that advises on the appropriate definition and use of high-quality value frameworks.

This issue panel discussed the methodological issues that have raised concerns about the validity of the current US value frameworks. The panel noted that existing European health technology assessment (HTA) guidelines, such as the EUnetHTA HTA Core Model®, already consider these methodological issues. The panel considered how the ISPOR Special Task Force adapt and potentially improve upon these European value framework approaches in the development of US value frameworks.
