The 2010 annual meetings provide an opportunity for mathematicians in all fields of mathematics to present talks and participate in panels on topics ranging from high-level research on new approaches to unsolved theoretical problems to recent applications of math to areas such as climate change, politics, and the arts, In addition, there are poster presentations by undergraduate students and several sessions on improving math education.

The prize session, at which leading mathematicians are recognized for their work, will take place Thursday afternoon from 4:25 to 5:25 in the Main Lecture Room.

Special presentations include poster the first national contest of Who Wants to Be a Mathematician--at which a high school student can win $10,000--on Thursday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. in Moscone 3020; "The theater of the mathematically absurd," a presentation by Colin Adams (Williams College), Friday 6:00-7:00 p.m. in Moscone 2020; "Open mike mathematical poetry reading," organized by Douglas Norton (Villanova University) on Thursday, 7:00-8:00 p.m. in Moscone 2009; and the annual Mathematical Art Exhibition held throughout the meeting in the exhibit hall.

The Joint Mathematics Meetings are held for the purpose of advancing mathematical achievement, encouraging research, and providing the communication necessary to progress in the field.
