St. Mary’s College of Maryland announced a freeze in tuition, fees, and room and board costs for the 2020-2021 academic year. The decision was made after a review of recommendations from a Board of Trustees Task Force, formed in 2019 at the request of President Tuajuanda C. Jordan. The Task Force studied how the College, as a public institution that is focused on providing an outstanding education, could ensure greater access to students.

Baylor University has named Jennifer Cognard-Black, professor of English at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, as the 2020 recipient of the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching. Awarded biennially, The Cherry Award is a prestigious national teaching award – with the single, largest monetary reward of $250,000 presented by a college or university to an individual for exceptional teaching. The award program is designed to honor great teachers, stimulate discussion in the academy about the value of teaching and encourage departments and institutions to recognize their own great teachers.

St. Mary's College of Maryland student Leo Boucher ’22 represented St. Mary's College sailing the weekend of Nov. 9-10 at the LaserPerformance Men's Singlehanded Nationals hosted by UC Santa Barbara. Boucher returned to campus as a National Champion by taking first place in the regatta.

St. Mary’s College environmental studies major Erin McPhillips '20 and chemistry major Coleman Welles '20 attended the ninth annual Naval Academy Science and Engineering Conference in Annapolis, Maryland. McPhillips presented a poster titled “Effects of Tidal Resuspension with Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea virginica, Biodeposits and Filtration in a Simulated Chesapeake Bay Ecosystem.”

Barry Muchnick, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at St. Mary's College of Maryland, has been awarded a $30,000 grant from The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. The funds will support research, development, and implementation of new programming at the Kate Chandler Campus Community Farm through enhanced partnerships between St. Mary’s College and Historic St. Mary’s City.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) has been awarded a $24,000 Chesapeake Material Cultural Studies Grant from The Conservation Fund. The grant will advance the College’s work using archaeological artifacts to examine how Native American groups in the Chesapeake’s major river drainages responded to the region’s occupation by European settlers.

A $100,000 technology product development grant will directly support the research and development work led by Troy Townsend, assistant professor of chemistry at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, who is the principle inventor for technology that uses nanomaterials to allow photovoltaic solar modules to be manufactured using an affordable, inkjet-like printing process.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland students Lauren Swam '19, Isaac Hersh '19, and Colin Cassady '19, recently had a firsthand experience studying marine ecology on the coral reefs of Belize. Interviewed for The Naturalist Podcast (http://www.naturalistpodcast.com/the-naturalist-podcast-episode-27-on-carrie-bow-cay-with-lauren-isaac-and-colin/), the three shared their encounters towing through seagrass beds, snorkeling mangrove forests, and doing research on coral reefs with Seabird McKeon, visiting professor in the biology department.

The Chesapeake Writers’ Conference hosts writers at all levels of experience for a rich week of lectures, craft talks, readings, and panel discussions, as well as daily workshops in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, translation, and screenwriting. Workshops are led by a variety of writers at the top of their field, such as Angela Pelster, winner of the Great Lakes Colleges Association “New Writer Award in Nonfiction;” Patricia Henley, a finalist for the National Book Award; and Elizabeth Arnold, a Whiting Writer’s Award winner.
