Since many Weddell seals live in areas in the Southern Ocean next to Antarctica that are not accessible to humans, the only way to count the seals was to use high-resolution satellite images taken from space. Researchers enlisted the help of hundreds of thousands of citizen scientists to look through the images to individually count the seals one by one.
