A lithium-ion battery in which lithium metal is used in place of graphite as the anode material is assembled in the glovebox in the clean room at South Dakota State University. This is part of research assistant professor Yue Zhou and his team in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science are doing through the new Governor’s Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage. He and three other SDSU faculty are collaborating with researchers at the South Dakota Mines to develop components for a solid-state lithium-ion battery cell.
