This photograph depicts a dorsal view of a female black-legged tick, Ixodes scapularis, which is often found on a wide range of hosts, including mammals, birds, and reptiles. I. scapularis is known to transmit Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, to humans and animals during feeding, which is the organism responsible for causing Lyme disease.
