Newswise — The Daily Record has named Darlene Brannigan Smith, B.S. '78, M.B.A. '80, dean of the University of Baltimore's Merrick School of Business and professor in the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship, to its 2013 list of "Maryland's Top 100 Women." Smith will also be inducted into the Circle of Excellence, a special recognition reserved only for those who have been named to the list three times. In addition, nine UB alumnae and an advisory board member are included in this year's list. The Daily Record, Maryland's business and legal newspaper, announced this year's honorees March 1. Created in 1996, this program recognizes outstanding achievement by women who have demonstrated significant professional accomplishments, outstanding community leadership and inspirational mentoring; more than 1,000 women have been honored to date. Smith, a respected marketing scholar and the first alumna to lead the University's School of Business, returned to campus in 2005 as associate dean and was appointed dean in 2008. Under her leadership in the past year alone, the UB/Towson M.B.A. program made U.S. News & World Report's list of the nation's best online programs, the business school introduced new programs including the M.S. in Innovation Management and Technology Innovation and the school led a University-wide effort to encourage and support entrepreneurship. Smith has published in leading marketing journals, graduated from the Leadership Maryland program and from the Greater Baltimore Committee's Leadership Program and serves as president of LIVE Baltimore's board of directors. Smith and 11 other members of the UB community will be recognized at a May 6 award celebration at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. The University of Baltimore is a member of the University System of Maryland and comprises the College of Public Affairs, the Merrick School of Business, the UB School of Law and the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences.
