Newswise — The National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) today announced the relaunch of Wonderopolis®, an award-winning site that offers a “Wonder of the Day® to engage a child’s curiosity and ignite a love of learning.
“Wonderopolis 2.0 has features that will improve its display on mobile and desktop devices, allow easier searches and navigation, and provide more interaction with users,” said Emily Kirkpatrick, vice president of NCFL. “Families and educators will find the site even more user friendly and engaging than ever before – creating a better learning environment for families, which, in turn, improves their educational and economic success.”
Wonderopolis 2.0 features and enhancements include: • A dedicated mobile site featuring responsive design for a better display on any mobile device or desktop.• An updated and enhanced home page design that makes navigating the site’s different sections easier.• A better overall user experience through a Wonderizer feature that allows users to customize the content that is displayed. • Improved search capabilities – users can now search by keyword, Wonder number, category, chronological order and date.• Greater participation and interaction through six educator and family blogs featured prominently in the Wonder Playground.• A field for “Country” included in the Contact and Nominate a Wonder forms to encourage and recognize international visitors to the site.
Justina Nixon-Saintil, director of education initiatives for the Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic entity of Verizon, which provides core financial support for Wonderopolis said, “We are proud to have supported NCFL for more than a decade and continue to maintain shared goals in improving student learning though the use of technology.”
Wonderopolis was voted one of TIME magazine’s “50 Top Websites of 2011,” and a 2011 WOMMY winner. Each Wonder of the Day is aligned with Common Core State Standards.
“I’m thrilled to share the new Wonderopolis experience with students, families and colleagues,” said Barbara Phillips, a second grade teacher in Hamilton, Ohio, who also blogs about her adventures with her family and students using Wonderopolis. “The new experience and resources will only enhance the engagement, learning and discovery of children and families that the previous website had already established.”
Currently, more than 100,000 parents, grandparents, students and teachers explore Wonderopolis each month, access the site’s more than 700 Wonders of the Day and leave more than 3,900 comments, Facebook posts or “likes” and share the content on Twitter.
