Newswise — November is National Family Literacy Month®, and there is no better time to make learning a daily habit in your family.
To mark the event, the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) is unveiling the latest edition of Cultivating Readers (Cultivando el hábito de la lectura) in English and Spanish to provide activities for parents to support their child’s literacy, language and reading skills.
“Parents are in the best position to instill in their children a lifelong love of learning,” said Sharon Darling, president and founder of NCFL. “Studies show that children who spend time reading with their parents are more likely to become accomplished readers themselves. This magazine will help parents incorporate effective, research-based literacy and reading activities into their daily routines.”
The 28-page magazine includes activities and strategies to increase reading readiness and school success specifically for three age groups – infants and toddlers, preschoolers, and students from kindergarten through third grade.
The magazine, which premiered in 2007, has been so popular that it was printed for a third time before being updated and expanded this year. A calendar of activities and ideas for using Wonderopolis® also has been added. Wonderopolis, which was created by NCFL, is an award-winning learning website that provides fun, interactive ways to ignite a love of learning in families.
Using the latest research, NCFL offers effective strategies through practical examples that parents can begin to use immediately. These reading strategies and activities emphasize the key literacy skills that are proven to increase children’s reading readiness and school success.
Funded by Toyota, the publication will be sent for free to parents who email NCFL at [email protected]. It also will be distributed to family literacy programs, early childhood programs, libraries, school- and community-based programs, faith-based programs and day-care centers for the cost of shipping and handling only.
Additionally, the magazine also is available for free download at http://www.famlit.org/free-resources/cultivating-readers/.
