Newswise — CHICAGO – A new survey conducted by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics shows median salaries for registered dietitian nutritionists and nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered have increased significantly more than inflation during the past two years.
On an annualized basis, the Academy’s 2019 Compensation and Benefits Survey of the Dietetics Profession shows an RDN’s median full-time salary in 2019 equated to $68,600 per year – an 8 percent increase since the Academy’s most recent survey in 2017. For NDTRs, the annualized 2019 salary was $45,800 – up 9 percent since 2017. The two-year inflation rate over that time, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, was 4.69 percent.
“The Compensation and Benefits Survey of the Dietetics Profession represents just one way in which the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is committed to doing all we can to help our members capitalize and create workforce opportunities to succeed in practice areas such as prevention and well-being, health care and health systems, and food and nutrition safety and security, now and in the future,” said registered dietitian nutritionist Terri J. Raymond, the Academy’s 2019-2020 President.
The 2019 survey is the ninth edition of the Academy’s survey, which started in 2002. An outside research firm collected the data in August and September from 8,765 respondents. They include Academy members and non-members who are either registered dietitian nutritionists or nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered.
According to the survey, higher levels of compensation are associated with number of years of experience, level of supervisory responsibility, budget responsibility and practice area. Specific work settings for which median hourly wages are highest include:
- Trade or professional association
- Pharmaceutical or nutrition products manufacturer, distributor or retailer
- College, university or academic medical center
- Food or equipment manufacturer, distributor or retailer.
“Clinical, community, and long-term care positions tend to pay less, whereas consultation/business, food and nutrition management, education, and research positions tend to pay more,” according to the survey.
The survey shows the highest-paid positions filled by substantial numbers of RDNs include executive-level professional; professor; associate professor; assistant professor; director of clinical nutrition; dietetic internship director; sales representative; research dietitian; director of food and nutrition services; publications and/or marketing professional; school foodservice director; clinical nutrition manager; consultant (communications); corporate dietitian and assistant foodservice director.
