Newswise — WASHINGTON, D.C., May 18, 2015 – Researchers uncovering the secrets of baby talk, bat-inspired sonar, hearing loss' effect on the brain, and noise's effect on our health will describe their latest findings during two webcast press events on Tuesday, May 19, 2015.

The events will be streamed live from the 169th meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), which takes place May 18-22 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Both webcasts will feature topics being presented at the meeting. The first webcast on noise and health will be held at 11:00 a.m. EDT and the second webcast on new discoveries in acoustics will be held at 2:00 p.m. EDT.

For a full list of speakers and topics, see below. To register, please visit http://www.aipwebcasting.com.

Reporters can submit questions for the researchers in real time through the webcast interface. For more information, please contact Jason Bardi or John Arnst.

FIRST WEBCAST: Noise and Health -- 11:00 a.m. EDT

The first Webcast features three speakers from a special session on “Noise and Health,” which is being held in honor of Dr. Karl Kryter, who spent a lifetime doing pioneering work in this area and who published the landmark book, The Effects of Noise on Man, in 1945. These speakers will discuss how noise affects our health, wellness and ability to function in a surprisingly wide range of ways -- many of which are well documented while others are still being discovered. SPEAKERS AND TOPICS• Mathias Basner, President of the International Commission on Biological Effects of Noise (ICBEN) and a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, will present on the auditory and non-auditory effects of noise on health. • Paul Barach, a clinical professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine and an expert on alarm fatigue will discuss the behavioral impacts and spatial dynamics of alarm fatigue in reverberant healthcare treatment spaces.• Wolfgang Babisch, who works for the World Health Organization, which is the most notable world authority on the health effects of noise, will discuss the cardiovascular effects of noise on humans.

SECOND WEBCAST: New Discoveries in Acoustics -- 2:00 p.m. EDT

The second webcast features a range of new discoveries from different conference sessions.

SPEAKERS AND TOPICS• Anu Sharma, from the University of Colorado, will discuss how changes in the brain due to hearing loss may impact other brain functions, and may be related to a widely reported link between age-related hearing loss and dementia.• Mark VanDam, from Washington State University, will discuss how mothers' and fathers' use of "baby talk" differs, and the role it might play in a child's speech development.• Rolf Mueller, from Virginia Tech, will present a robotic sonar system inspired by bats.

ABOUT THE MEETINGThe 169th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) will be held May 18-22, 2015, at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown Hotel. It will feature nearly 1,000 presentations on sound and its applications in physics, engineering, music, architecture and medicine. Reporters are invited to cover the meeting remotely or attend in person for free. PRESS REGISTRATIONWe will grant free registration to credentialed journalists and professional freelance journalists. If you are a reporter and would like to attend, contact Jason Bardi ([email protected], 240-535-4954), who can also help with setting up interviews and obtaining images, sound clips, or background information.

WORLD WIDE PRESS ROOMASA's World Wide Press Room is being updated with additional tips on dozens of newsworthy stories and with lay-language papers, which are 300-1,200 word summaries of presentations written by scientists for a general audience and accompanied by photos, audio, and video. ABOUT THE ACOUSTICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICAThe Acoustical Society of America (ASA) is the premier international scientific society in acoustics devoted to the science and technology of sound. Its 7,000 members worldwide represent a broad spectrum of the study of acoustics. ASA publications include The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (the world's leading journal on acoustics), Acoustics Today magazine, books, and standards on acoustics. The society also holds two major scientific meetings each year. For more information about ASA, visit our website at http://www.acousticalsociety.org.
