Newswise — Chicago, May 5, 2015) Judith Green-McKenzie, MD, MPH, FACOEM, FACP, of the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia, was honored by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), an international medical society, when it bestowed upon her its 2015 Kehoe Award for Excellence in Education or Research in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. The award – presented May 3 during ACOEM’s 2015 American Occupational Health Conference (AOHC) in Baltimore – is a lifetime achievement award that recognizes an individual who has shown distinction in and made significant contributions to academic excellence or research in the disciplines of occupational medicine (OM), environmental medicine, and/or environmental health.

Dr. Green-McKenzie holds numerous appointments at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) including that of Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the UPenn Hospital, and OM Division Chief, UPenn Perelman School of Medicine. She received her MD from Yale University School of Medicine and her MPH from Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health. Dr. Green-McKenzie is certified in OM by the American Board of Preventive Medicine and serves on its Examination Committee.

Dr. Green-McKenzie was recognized in particular for her work and accomplishments as a distinguished educator. Specifically, she was honored for her outstanding leadership as Director of UPenn’s OM Residency Program which has resulted in the development of a unique train-in-place program that is an innovative model of post-graduate medical education. Passion for her work is evidenced by her involvement with the University’s OM Advisory Committee, the Graduate Program in Public Health Studies, and the Community Outreach and Education Core of the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology. In addition, she serves on NIOSH study sections and on its Board of Scientific Counselors as well as on the IOM Committee on Social Security. As author of numerous scientific publications focusing on outcomes in OM, especially in the areas of blood borne pathogen exposures, workers’ compensation costs and residency education, she also mentors residents publishing scholarly work.

A member of ACOEM since 1996, Dr. Green-McKenzie was elevated to Fellowship in 2003. She is Secretary for the History and Archives Section and was a member of the 2015 AOHC Planning Committee and an advisor for 2013 AOHC. Dr. Green-McKenzie has served on the Council on Education and Academic Affairs, the OEM Competencies Task Force, and as panel co-chair for the Hip and Groin Disorders Chapter of the Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines. She is a member of the Editorial Board for ACOEM’s Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

About the Kehoe Award — Kehoe Award for Excellence in Education or Research in Occupational and Environmental Medicine has been presented annually to a leader in the field of OEM education and research since 1957. The award was named for Robert A. Kehoe, MD, (1893-1992), director of the Kettering Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati, and a past president of ACOEM (1949-50).
