A Rutgers University global health expert is available to comment on the inequities that are being brought to the forefront during the COVID-19 pandemic and the ways in which denial of risk is undermining efforts to slow the virus’s spread.
“Epidemics have a history of widening the chasms in our society,” said Richard Marlink, director of Rutgers Global Health Institute, who was a leader in the global response to HIV/AIDS. “It’s easier for the salaried office worker to shelter in place than it is for the gig worker, and 40 percent of Americans are unable to afford an extra $400 bill. At the same time, many who are in a position to stay home are denying the importance of social distancing, and that is putting our society’s most vulnerable at an even greater risk—both of infection and of long-term health and economic impacts.”
