Newswise — Ursinus College has announced its plan to change the name of a four-year literary scholarship. The scholarship, which will be awarded in the next few weeks, was originally established to honor writer J.D. Salinger, who briefly attended the college in 1938.
"In accordance with Mr. Salinger's wishes, Ursinus will not use his name related to the scholarship," said Richard DiFeliciantonio, Vice President for Enrollment. "With the best of intentions, we erred in failing to obtain the writer's approval."
A writing scholarship, valued at $25,000 annually, will be given to a deserving young writer who will have the opportunity to develop his or her talent in Ursinus' Creative Writing Program. The name has not been established.
Ursinus College, founded in 1869, is a highly selective, nationally ranked, independent, coeducational liberal arts college, located on a wooded, 170-acre campus, 28 miles from Center City Philadelphia.
