Crack that whip!

"Most physicists will eagerly tell you that the loud cracking sounds produced by the whip are acoustic evidences of the supersonic speeds with which the end of the whip moves," physicist and mathematician Piotr Pieranski told ScienceNewsWeek. "All of them, however, will start mumbling when you ask them why the end of the whip reaches such an incredible speed -- just try asking!"

So why does the end of a whip reach a speed high enough to produce a sonic boom? American physicist Alain Goriely may now know.

"The origin of the high speed of the whip end has not been known until Goriely's latest work," Pieranski said. "The answer is hidden in the realm of classical mechanics. Why was it not found before? Because the calculations you must make are extremely difficult."http://www.sciencenewsweek.com/articles/whips.htm

Cosmic snakes in the gas

Snakes in the gas -- cosmic gas -- may be slithering across the heavens, top physicists say. With their undulating event horizons and slippery disappearing acts, serpentine black holes called "black strings" have long been thought too unstable to exist. They may soon steal the spotlight from their globular black hole brethren, however, as they emerge from the shadowy realm of extra dimensions.http://www.sciencenewsweek.com/articles/blackstrings.htm

Home schoolers unearth rare dinosaur

A religion-based group of home schoolers has unearthed an amazingly intact allosaurus that may land them in the annals of archaeology. The beastly fossil -- once a carnivorous relative of T-Rex -- is one of only three worldwide with a complete skull, nearly a yard long. http://www.sciencenewsweek.com/articles/allosaurus.htm
