Newswise — New Brunswick, NJ – The Rutgers School of Public Health is excited to announce that Stephanie Shiau, PhD, will be joining the department of biostatistics and epidemiology as an instructor in August.

Shiau’s research focuses on the effects of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and its treatment over time, aiming to identify modifiable factors that influence trajectories of HIV-associated non-AIDS (HANA) conditions in children, adolescents, and adults living with HIV. Her work integrates epidemiologic tools, imaging assessments, and laboratory biomarkers, including assays to measure epigenetic markers.

“The Rutgers School of Public Health is proud to welcome Dr. Shiau to our ranks,” says Perry N. Halkitis, PhD, MS, MPH, dean of the Rutgers School of Public Health. “Dr. Shiau is a rigorous epidemiologist who focuses on designing and implementing clinical trials and observational research studies to improve the health of populations living with and affected by HIV locally and globally.”

“The department of biostatistics and epidemiology is fortunate to be adding Dr. Shiau’s expertise,” says department chair, Jason Roy, PhD. “Dr. Shiau’s passion for teaching epidemiologic methods and research at the intersection of HIV and aging will enrich our students, department, and School.”

“I am thrilled to return to my home state of New Jersey to establish my research program and build new collaborations across Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences,” says Shiau. “I look forward to teaching and mentoring the next generation of public health scholars and practitioners.”

Shiau joins the Rutgers School of Public Health from the G.H. Sergievsky Center at Columbia University Medical Center, where she is currently a postdoctoral research scientist. She received a PhD and MPH in Epidemiology from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University and a BA in Public Health Studies at Johns Hopkins University.
