Newswise — TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – World-renowned analytics experts will present innovative case studies at The University of Alabama's 2014 Institute of Business Analytics annual symposium Jan. 30-31 at the Hotel Capstone.

The two-day event, hosted by the Culverhouse College of Commerce, will explore the diverse landscape of analytics in business with presentations on statistics, forecasting, operations research, credit scoring, predictive modeling and data mining. Analytics experts from Culverhouse, ESPN, SAS, Nielsen, Millennial Media, Atlanta Braves, Alfa Insurance, BBVA Compass, Priorize, BNSF Railway, Webb Wheel and more will provide analysis of real world case studies.

“We continue to be a recognized leader in business analytics and this annual symposium sets the stage for The University of Alabama and Culverhouse to continue as a leader in analytics education,” said Dr. J. Michael Hardin, dean of the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Russell Professor of Business and Professor of Statistics. “Business analytics is a key component for every business in the world to remain competitive.”

A few of the presentation topics include sports analytics in developing power rankings, adapting marketing mix models for bid data and how winning a national championship a good predictor for undergraduate enrollment.

Attendees will be able to interact with other participants including practitioners, faculty and University of Alabama students pursuing graduate degrees in statistics, business analytics and economics. A resume book of all students in attendance will be distributed to represented businesses and industries. Attendees will also have the opportunity to network with seasoned colleagues from a variety of different firms.

Lee, Jr. Faculty Fellow. “We want to ensure that our students are getting an education that is innovative and relevant and this line-up provides just that.”

The Institute of Business Analytics is an applied research center within which data mining techniques are used to extract information from vast amounts of corporate data. Predictive models are constructed to enhance the ability of an organization to make better decisions. The center serves as a key focal point for business intelligence research within the College of Commerce and for University/Industry partnerships involving applied research in all aspects of business analytics.
