Newswise — A group of nine University of Baltimore students and recent graduates of the University’s honors accounting program in the Merrick School of Business and their faculty advisers will travel to the United Kingdom July 19-27, during which they will attend a worldwide conference of the as well as make exclusive research presentations to scholars and students from the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford.
The students—nearly all of whom are members of the school’s accounting honors program—regularly travel to accounting association events and conferences, where they present papers, network, and pick up on the latest research in their chosen profession, according to Dalton Tong, B.S. ’73, M.B.A. ’75, executive in residence and director of the University’s Accounting Honors Program.
“This is the first time the group has traveled overseas, and naturally they are thrilled that it is to the prestigious destination of Oxford,” Tong said. “They are working diligently on their presentations, which will explore some important developments in accounting that we suspect will be embraced by the profession in both the United States and elsewhere.”
The students, all of whom are from metropolitan Baltimore, also will visit the Bank of England and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. At the International Accounting Standards Board conference in London, they will observe deliberations about the evolution and convergence of U.S. and international accounting standards.
“This convergence is the #1 topic in accounting today,” Tong said. “To be part of that discussion is a great opportunity for the students. Also, the institute serves as the genesis of accounting all over the world. It’s where accounting as a profession began.”
The global experience culminates a year in which these high achieving students also visited a number of local, regional and national accounting firms plus several influential institutions in the field, such as the Securities and Exchange Commission and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
A group of honors accounting students from the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University will join the UB students on the trip, according to Tong.
Jan Williams, M.S. ’95, associate professor of accounting and faculty adviser for the trip, pointed out that Ohio State has one of the most respected accounting programs in the nation and believes the partnership will benefit both institutions.
“The University of Baltimore historically has had a strong accounting program,” Williams said. “Partnering with Ohio State will further enhance the reputation and reach of both of our programs, and shine a light on all of the students from the perspective of the accounting profession.”
