Newswise — CHICAGO – Ten members of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, are among 20 nationally recognized nutrition and health science authorities named on February 21 by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services to the government’s new 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.
“On behalf of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, it is my pleasure to recognize and congratulate our fellow members who will serve on the DGA Expert Advisory Panel,” said registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy President Mary Russell. “Our colleagues have been selected for their expertise in public health. We commend their commitment to rigorously review the current state of food and nutrition science. Their important work will form the basis for the USDA and HHS’ development of the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.”
Academy members and registered dietitian nutritionists who will serve on the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee are:

- Carol Boushey, PhD, MPH, RD, University of Hawaii
- Sharon Donovan, PhD, RD, University of Illinois
- Steven Heymsfield, MD, Louisiana State University
- Richard Mattes, PhD, MPH, RD, Purdue University
- Elizabeth Mayer-Davis, PhD, RD, University of North Carolina
- Rachel Novotny, PhD, RDN, LD, University of Hawaii
- Linda Snetselaar, PhD, RD, University of Iowa
- Jamie Stang, PhD, University of Minnesota, School of Public Health, Division of Epidemiology & Community Health
- Linda Van Horn, PhD, RDN, LD, Northwestern University.
The committee will review scientific evidence on topics and questions identified by the Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services and provide a report of its findings. The report, as well as public and agency comments, will help in the development of the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
The cornerstone of federal food policy in the United States, the Dietary Guidelines are especially important in developing nutrition education and strengthening food assistance programs including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Child Nutrition and WIC programs.
