APHON Membership Awards recognize members who have shown outstanding achievement in their field.

APHON Counts My Most Memorable Case Award
My Most Memorable Case articles feature personal stories from APHON members and the various life lessons their patients have taught them. Spinardi, from Valley Children’s Hospital, won this award for her My Most Memorable Case article, “Brave, Wild, and Free” in the summer 2017 issue.

The APHON Counts Writing Award is given to recognize a contributing author of the newsletter. Langevin, a Family Nurse Practitioner at Children’s Minnesota, won this award for her article; “Integrative Nursing: Addressing the Psychosocial Needs of Pediatric and AYA Oncology in the Ambulatory Setting” published in the spring 2018 issue.

Jibb, an assistant professor from the University of Ottawa, won this award for her manuscript, “Development of a mHealth Real-Time Pain Self-Management App for Adolescents with Cancer: An Iterative Usability Testing Study” published in the July/August 2017 issue.

The APHON Writing Award is given to an APHON member who is a first-time author of a manuscript accepted for publication in JOPON in the last year and who has had three or more manuscripts published previously. Laing, Assistant Professor at The University of Calgary | HBI, won this award for her manuscript, “Stories That Heal: Understanding the Effects of Creating Digital Stories with Pediatric and Adolescent/Young Adult Oncology Patients” published in the July/August 2017 issue.

Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Instructor of the Year Award
The Instructor of the Year Award recognizes an APHON Pediatric Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Instructor who positively impacts the students they teach and the patients and families they serve by demonstrating leadership and excellence in the classroom. This year’s recipient of this award is Caroline Anderson, Education Coordinator, Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant at Cook Children’s Medical Center.

Jean Fergusson Excellence in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nursing Education Award
The Jean Fergusson Education Award recognizes an outstanding educator in the field of pediatric hematology/oncology nursing through demonstration of proficiency, professional contributions to the field, and positive teacher-learner relationships. Smith, a Case Manager for the Blood and Marrow Transplant Service and the PANDA Palliative Care Service at Children’s National Health System, has over 27 years of nursing experience. Smiths’ colleagues speak very highly of her, one of which stating, “Marsha developed and implemented a very successful program which is an interactive patient education method to engage nurses, clinical team members, parents, and patients in the new diagnosis cancer education process.”

Distinguished Researcher Award
The Distinguished Researcher Award is given to a member who has excelled as a nurse scientist. Patterson Kelly, a Nurse Scientist at Children’s National Health System Department of Nursing Science, Professional Practice and Quality has focused on treatment decision making research in families facing cancer as a natural outgrowth of the clinical challenges faced by nurses working with families over the course of a child’s illness.

APHON Early Career Researcher Award.
The Early Career Researcher Award is given to a member who is a novice nurse scientist. Withycombe is an Assistant Professor, Tenure Track at Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. Dr. Withycombe’s currently has 21 peer reviewed manuscripts related specifically to pediatric hematology/oncology research and two book chapters.

Dr. Cheryl C. Rodgers Excellence in Evidence Based Practice Award
The Dr. Cheryl C. Rodgers Excellence in Evidence Based Practice Award, previously known simply as the Excellence in Evidence Based Practice Award, recognizes an APHON member who has demonstrated high quality contributions to evidence-based practice in the nursing care of children and their families in any area of hematology/oncology nursing practice. Dr. Debbie Lafond is the Co-Director at the Children’s National Health System PANDA Palliative Care Team Hospitalist Medicine. Dr. Lafond formed the APHON evidence-based practice and research committee and served as the first chair for several years. Dr. Lafond has received over $330,000 in grant funding for multiple palliative care projects other projects related to nursing and patient care.
APHON is the professional organization for pediatric hematology/oncology nurses and other pediatric hematology/oncology healthcare professionals. Its members are dedicated to promoting optimal nursing care for children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and blood disorders, and their families. APHON provides the leadership and expertise to pediatric hematology/oncology nurses by defining and promoting the highest standards of practice and care to the pediatric, adolescent and young adult communities.
