Newswise — FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Elizabeth Howlett, a professor of marketing in the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas, served on the committee that is proposing a new system for federal food nutrition labels. She will be available in Arkansas to comment on her work and the proposed system.
At 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 in Washington D.C. the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Examination of Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols is expected to recommend a simple system for using icons on the front of food packaging to make it easy for busy shoppers to make healthy food choices for themselves and their families.
Howlett was invited to serve as one of two marketing experts on the committee that considered the potential benefits of a single, standardized front-label food guidance system regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. The committee’s work included assessment of which icons are most effective with consumer audiences and development of conclusions about the systems/icons that best promote health and how to maximize their use. Details of the project can be seen at http://www.iom.edu/Activities/Nutrition/NutritionSymbols.aspx
Howlett is available for interviews by phone or in person at her office in Fayetteville, Ark.
