Newswise — LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — (June 2, 2015) — There's a new game for serious gamers* to explore on the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Verigames site (https://verigames.com/). Ghost Map Hyperspace, developed by Raytheon BBN Technologies, is the newest addition to a series of games being developed under DARPA sponsorship that empower gamers to do the work of software verification experts simply by playing games.

Usually, software verification requires highly skilled engineers with extensive training and experience who rigorously analyze software to prove its correctness mathematically. The process is slow and expensive. The goal of DARPA's Crowd Sourced Formal Verification (CSFV) program is to create fun and engaging games that represent mathematical analysis of commonly used open source software so more people can perform code verification more efficiently. Players simply play a game and, as they achieve higher levels and complete required tasks, they help prove the absence of specific software vulnerabilities.

Games developed under the CSFV program span a range of themes, including robots, botany, and electrical widgets. Ghost Map Hyperspace uses an interstellar warfare theme and is more intuitive than a previous version, Ghost Map, making it easier and quicker for new players to progress in the game.

"We've boosted the fun factor and changed the interface to make the best use of the player's time and effort," said Ron Watro, Ph.D. and CSFV principal investigator at Raytheon BBN Technologies. "Now we're inviting gamers to enjoy the new game and help us improve software security at the same time."
