Newswise — Over 6,000 mathematicians will attend the annual meetings of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and Mathematical Association of America (MAA) at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, January 6-9. The annual Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) provide an opportunity for mathematicians in all fields of mathematics to present research, serve on panels, use the Employment Center, visit the exhibits, and attend social events. The JMM includes over 2,800 presentations–invited lectures, sessions and panels--on theoretical research, on applications that help analyze and solve real-world problems, and on topics such as Environment and Climate, Biology and Medicine, Math Education and Outreach, Sports and Recreation, Public Policy, Diversity in Math, the Arts, Digital Information, and the History of Math. More information about each of those topics and about the meeting is in the JMM 2016 Virtual Press Roomhttp://www.ams.org/meetings/national/virtual-pressroom-jmm2016 . Free and open to the general public• “Network Science: From the Online World to Cancer Genomics,” the MAA-AMS-SIAM Gerald and Judith Porter Public Lecture by Jennifer Chayes, Microsoft Research, Saturday January 9, 2016, 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m., Ballroom 6BC, Washington State Convention Center • National Who Wants to Be a Mathematician game. Fast-paced and fun competition with 10 high school students from around the country, including one from the Seattle area, competing for the top prize of $10,000, followed by a public talk by Simon Singh “Fermat’s Last Theorem versus The Simpsons” Thursday, January 7, 9:30-11:50 a.m., Room 6A, Washington State Convention Center Selected topics at the 2016 JMM:Environment and ClimateMath plays a role in understanding many aspects of our environment and climate, and how they fit together. Biology and MedicineBiology is increasingly a data-driven subject. Researchers use mathematics to study topics including epidemics, cancer growth, and HIV treatment. Math EducationThe state of mathematics education continues to generate discussion and proposals. Speakers will present research on: teaching tools, innovative ways to engage students, training teachers at all levels, and “Inquiry-Based Learning.” Sports and RecreationMath and statistics help examine strategies, rankings, streaks, and slumps, as well as coaches' and players' decisions. Public PolicyHear one former Congressional Fellow talk about his experience working for Rep. Jim McDermott (WA), another talk about her recommendations for promoting math to policy-makers, and talks on modeling health care reform. Diversity in Math Many people are aiming to increase diversity of individuals in the field of mathematics. See a documentary Navajo Math Circles and hear about incorporating contributions of women and minorities in the classroom. The ArtsThe connection between math and the arts is deep and beautiful. See stunning works in the Mathematical Art Exhibition, and enjoy "Mathematically Bent Theater" as well as talks on computational origami, geodesic universal models, and tessellations. Digital Information Publishers, libraries and computer scientists are finding solutions and challenges in gathering and digitizing data, making it available, yet keeping it private when necessary. History of MathHear about the Antikythera Mechanism, and talks on mathematical sciences of medieval Islam. Joint Prize SessionThis event showcases the achievements of individuals in the mathematics community. 4:25 p.m. – 5:25 p.m. Ballroom 6BC, Washington State Convention Center. Reception follows. Press RegistrationMembers of the press enjoy complimentary registration for the meeting and are welcome to use the Press Room that will offer free wireless access, the book of abstracts, phone (206-219-4523), and a place to conduct interviews. The Press Room will be in Room 613 of the Convention Center, open: Wednesday, January 6 through Friday January 8, 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., and Saturday, January 9, 7:30 a.m. to noon. #JMM16 Mobile App http://bit.ly/1XTJzpnFor download on iOS® and AndroidTM devices. The app provides access to the program, posters, exhibits, social events, committee schedules, floorplans, sponsors, speakers, abstracts, and local information. The Joint Mathematics Meetings are held for the purpose of advancing mathematical achievement, encouraging research, and providing the communication necessary to progress in the field. These meetings serve to preserve, supplement, and utilize the results of the research of mathematicians the world over. Keeping abreast of the progress in mathematics results in the furtherance of the interest of mathematical scholarship and research.
