As Alaska reels from today’s 7.0-magnitude earthquake, Salisbury University geography and geosciences professors are available to discuss the possible causes of the geological event and what it may mean for the future.
Dr. Michael Scott, interim dean of SU’s Richard A. Henson School of Science and Technology, has written and presented extensively about geological hazards at conferences and in publications sponsored by the Association of American Geographers and the National States Geographic Information Council. In 2011, he served as a source of information for the Washington Post, Baltimore Sun and others on the surprise Virginia/Washington, D.C., earthquake.
Dr. Thomas Cawthern, assistant professor of geography and geosciences, has been involved in field mapping and analysis of terrestrial and marine sediments and rocks to reconstruct Earth’s geological history. A member of the Geological Society of American and American Geophysical Union, among others, he recently spoke to Newsweek about the U.S. Geological Survey’s recent National Volcanic Threat Assessment, which included multiple high-risk volcanic sites in Alaska.
