Newswise — The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing has appointed Mona Shattell, PhD, RN, FAAN, to serve as inaugural Associate Dean for Faculty Development. She will support and promote faculty development, advancement, and retention, and further an environment of diversity, inclusion, and mentorship among the school’s academic teachers and leaders.
“Dr. Shattell brings a wealth of knowledge and strong scholarship directly aligned to fostering faculty preparation, career progression, and leadership,” says JHSON Dean Patricia Davidson, PhD, MEd, RN, FAAN. “Positioning and growth are especially important to ensuring faculty find support for their success, research, and scholarship, and to providing our students with the best possible education and opportunities. We are excited Dr. Shattell will be taking the leading role in this priority for our school.”
Shattell has extensive experience working with faculty gained through her position as associate dean for research and faculty development at the DePaul University College of Science and Health. She has also served as a professor at Rush University College of Nursing and associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, among other positions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
As an internationally recognized expert on inpatient mental health nursing, Shattell conducts research on the mental health of vulnerable populations and serves as a board member for several community non-profit mental health advocacy and service organizations. She is editor of the Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services and former associate editor of Advances in Nursing Science and Issues in Mental Health Nursing. Her other areas of interest include therapeutic relationships, nursing education, work environment of truckers, and psychosis.
Shattell is a regular Huffington Post blogger and has had various op-eds published in the New York Times, The Atlantic, and Health Affairs blog. She is an active social media user, content developer, and public thought leader and formerly served as a Public Voices Fellow with the OpEd Project.
Various awards and honors she has earned include Researcher of the Year Award from the International Society of Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurses, “Women of Spirit and Action” Honoree from DePaul University, named as One of the Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina, and a Member Scholar of the International Institute for Qualitative Methodology.
