Mark E. Rosenberg To Become Next President of The american Society of Nephrology
Dr. Rosenberg will lead an organization of more than 20,000 health professionals from 131 countries dedicated to leading the fight against kidney diseases.

Newswise — San Diego, CA (October 28, 2018)—The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) is pleased to announce that Mark E. Rosenberg, MD, FASN, will become the next ASN President for the coming year. He will assume his new role during ASN Kidney Week 2018, at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California. Dr. Rosenberg succeeds Mark D. Okusa, MD, FASN.
An experienced and innovative medical educator, Dr. Rosenberg is currently the Vice Dean for Education and Academic Affairs at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis. In addition to his roles as a nephrologist and professor of medicine, he oversees medical education at the university across the continuum of undergraduate medical education (medical students), graduate medical education (residents and fellows), and continuing medical education.
With interests that include expanding the nephrology workforce, enhancing learning programs, and integrating trainees into professional care teams, Dr. Rosenberg is passionate about inspiring interest in the field of nephrology and ensuring the success of his students. He has served as Fellowship Director of the nephrology training program at the University of Minnesota, as founding and principal investigator of a National Institutes of Health training grant in nephrology clinical research, and as the Senior Fellowship Coordinator of all fellowship programs in the Department of Medicine.
In addition, Dr. Rosenberg has served as Director of the University of Minnesota’s Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension, as well as Nephrology Section Chief and Director of the Primary and Specialty Medicine Service Line at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, and Chair of the NIDDK DDK-D Study Section. His past research focused on progression of chronic kidney disease, including the role of the renin-angiotensin system in pathogenesis and treatment, kidney regeneration, and delivery of care via telehealth. More recently, he has developed the Medical Education Outcomes Center at the University of Minnesota with the goal of connecting medical education to health outcomes and workforce needs.
Dr. Rosenberg has a long history of close involvement with ASN. He has served on the ASN Council, as well as Education Director for ASN Kidney Week, Chair of the Postgraduate Education Committee, Chair of the ASN Kidney Week Review Project, Chair of the Training Program Director’s Executive Committee, and as an Associate Editor of NephSAP. He is also the recipient of ASN’s Robert G. Narins Award for his contributions to nephrology education and teaching.
“I am excited, energized, and humbled to be elected ASN President,” Rosenberg says. “This opportunity is a career high for me, and I will approach the position with enthusiasm as well as a commitment to work hard and leave ASN in an even better place than when I started.”
Due to Dr. Rosenberg’s special interest in medical education, he recognizes the importance of bringing the nephrology community together to continue to enhance the pipeline into the specialty, such as through programs like Kidney TREKS, Kidney STARS, and other initiatives to better appeal to students and trainees. He also feels it’s important to develop new, engaging educational products that support life-long learning to ensure the best patient outcomes.
Additionally, Dr. Rosenberg is encouraged and excited by ASN’s collaborative spirit, and he hopes to continue to cultivate important partnerships with key stakeholders to have a greater impact on innovation and discovery which will ultimately improve patient care. He is particularly excited about working to increase diversity within the organization as well as what the futures of KidneyX, the Kidney Health Initiative (KHI), and Nephrologists Transforming Dialysis Safety (NTDS) will bring.

ASN Kidney Week 2018, the largest nephrology meeting of its kind, will provide a forum for more than 13,000 professionals to discuss the latest findings in kidney health research and engage in educational sessions related to advances in the care of patients with kidney and related disorders.
