Newswise — CLEVELAND – University Hospitals (UH) recently announced Mukesh K. Jain, MD, has been appointed its new Chief Academic Officer. In this role, Dr. Jain will report to Daniel I. Simon, MD, President of UH Medical Centers.
As Chief Academic Officer (CAO), Dr. Jain will lead the academic efforts of UH and provide oversight for the full spectrum of research that includes basic and translational as well as clinical and population research. In addition, he will oversee educational efforts including graduate medical education, continuing medical education, undergraduate medical education and community education.
“Over the past two years, Dr. Jain has played a pivotal role in the development and implementation of University Hospitals’ academic strategic plan,” said Dr. Simon. “I am very pleased to have such a distinguished international leader in science and medicine take over as CAO and direct our efforts to advance our national leadership in research and translational medicine moving forward.”
Dr. Jain has been a member of the UH community since 2006, serving in several capacities including most recently Chief Scientific Officer, UH and Harrington Discovery Institute, as well as Chief Research Officer, UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. He is continuing in these roles after assuming his new position on Jan. 1.
Dr. Jain is widely recognized for pioneering studies that led to the identification of a family of genetic factors that govern critical aspects of metabolism, immunity and the cardiovascular system.
His work has been published in top-tier peer-reviewed journals and he has been continuously funded for the past 20 years through support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), American Heart Association (AHA), American Diabetes Association, Foundation LeDucq and Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group.
Dr. Jain has received numerous honors and awards and is an elected member of prominent honorific societies, including the National Academy of Medicine. He is past President of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, one of the oldest physician societies in the country.
Most recently, Dr. Jain earned distinction from the AHA and Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group obtaining a $9.6 million grant from the American Heart Association’s Allen Initiative in Brain Health and Cognitive Impairment, a new collaborative funding initiative launched this year. The grant was one of three awarded by both organizations in November 2018.
He has trained over 35 faculty members who are a part of faculty at top institutions across the globe, efforts that have been recognized through mentorship awards from Harvard Medical School and UH.
