Newswise — The Myositis Association (TMA), the leading international patient organization dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by myositis, is pleased to announce the appointment of the following individuals to its distinguished Medical Advisory Board:
Tae Hwan Chung, MD is an assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Myositis Center at the Johns Hopkins Medical Center. As a physiatrist, Dr. Chung specializes in investigating and developing rehabilitative treatments and therapeutic exercise programs for patients with neuromuscular diseases, such as myositis. He developed and runs a multidisciplinary rehabilitation clinic with the Johns Hopkins neuromuscular rehabilitation team, which includes physical, occupational, and speech therapists.
Sonye Danoff, MD, PhD is an associate professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, co-director of the Johns Hopkins Interstitial Lung Disease Clinic, and a clinician/researcher at the Johns Hopkins Myositis Center. Dr. Danoff is among the world’s most distinguished pulmonologists specializing in interstitial lung disease, a serious condition for many myositis patients that causes scarring in the lung.
Malin Regardt, PhD, OT is Director of Research at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden and a member of a multidisciplinary research group focused on understanding and treating myositis diseases. Dr. Regardt is also an investigator with the OMERACT (Outcome Measures in Rheumatology) Myositis special interest group, an international collective working to incorporate the patient perspective into myositis research studies.
Myositis is a rare autoimmune disease that causes severe muscle pain and weakness, debilitating skin rashes, and other often life-threatening symptoms. This chronic, disabling condition is a challenge to diagnose and has no cure.
The Myositis Association is an international nonprofit organization committed to support and education for myositis patients and caregivers, increasing awareness of myositis throughout the patient and physician communities, and funding for myositis-related research.
TMA’s Medical Advisory Board brings together 23 of the world’s most prominent myositis researchers and clinicians in the fields of rheumatology, neurology, pulmonology, dermatology, and rehabilitation to unite their unique research and clinical perspectives in the effort to bring better understanding, new treatments, and eventually a cure for myositis diseases. These specialists also lead TMA’s educational efforts and advise the organization’s research funding program.
