Newswise — The Myositis Association (TMA), the leading international patient organization dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by myositis, is pleased to announce the appointment of the following individuals to its Board of Directors:
Jeff Autrey, an Albuquerque attorney, Gail Bayliss, an emergency medicine physician from Oregon, Rex Bickers, a retired neonatologist from Indiana, David Mochel, an orthopedic surgeon from Chicago, and James McTevia, a Florida businessman and author of the book One-Eyed Kings: Lessons I Learned from an Incurable Disease.
Each of these individuals is affected by one of the forms of myositis, either as a patient or as the family member of a patient. They share a passion for TMA’s mission to provide education, research, and support to the myositis community and to one day see a cure for this disabling disease of the muscles.
As directors, these individuals are responsible for overseeing the organization’s operations, while maintaining its commitment to its mission. This involves establishing TMA’s strategic direction, ensuring its compliance with all applicable legal requirements, and keeping the organization financially healthy.
Myositis is a rare autoimmune disease that causes severe muscle pain and weakness, debilitating skin rashes, and other often life-threatening symptoms. This chronic, disabling condition is a challenge to diagnose and has no cure.
The Myositis Association is an international nonprofit organization committed to support and education for myositis patients and caregivers, increasing awareness of myositis throughout the patient and physician communities, and funding for myositis-related research.
TMA is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that includes patients, family members, and interested professionals, bringing diverse strengths and perspectives to the organization. In addition, the organization’s Medical Advisory Board consists of 23 of the world’s leading myositis researchers and clinicians.
