The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University's Fine Arts Programming has announced its 2003-04 Fine Arts Series. The upcoming season offers a variety of music, theater, dance, cultural performances and visual art exhibits. Early bird discounts on single tickets are available through June 13. The season opens with the Actor's Gang performing The Guys on Sept. 5 and 6. This performance is a two-character play about a journalist's personal experiences in the aftermath of Sept. 11.
There are also several family performances in the season, including Michael Cooper, who will present storytelling with breathtaking, handcrafted masks; Fred Garbo Inflatable Theater Co. will dazzle family audiences with inflatable fun and the Omaha Theater Company for Young People will present Miss Nelson is Missing, the popular children's story about a missing teacher.
The Family Weekend line-up is strong, with Pastiche, the CSB/SJU Music Faculty Ensemble performing classical music on Friday, Oct. 17 and The Four Bitchin' Babes on Saturday, Oct. 18.
The holiday season will be filled with high spirit performances such as Turtle Island String Quartet and the holiday performance by Cantus. Bringing in the new year will be The Trinity Irish Dance Company and The SamulNori Korean Drummers.
The Aquila Theatre Company is back by popular demand and will be performing Othello and The Man Who Would Be King. Aquila's trademark adventurous and innovative production style will bring these stories to life.
Spring 2004 is packed with several music performances, including Habib Koite, a world music performer and The Steve Turre Quintet, who will be playing an evening of music honoring J.J. Johnson, a musician credited with single handedly bringing the trombone into the modern age. Also performing in the spring is Prudence Johnson with the St. Cloud Symphony Orhestra and the Hot Club of San Francisco.
Diavolo Dance Theater will return to the Benedicta Arts Center on the CSB campus to present the Midwestern premiere of DreamCatcher, commissioned by CSB. This project is the culmination of two years of planning with Diavolo and the central Minnesota community.
The fine arts programming series is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Minnesota State Arts Board, Heartland Arts Fund and Target Stores, Marshall Field's and Mervyn's.
