UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON COMMENCEMENT SCHEDULED MAY 14-16

MADISON -- A weekend of beginnings commences Friday, May 14, for the approximately 4,000 students eligible to graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison this spring.

Five ceremonies will be held at the university's Kohl Center:

* Friday, May 14, 5:30 p.m., all doctoral and professional degrees. Honorary degrees also will be conferred at this ceremony.

* Saturday, May 15, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., College of Letters and Science bachelor's and master's degrees.

Nadine Strossen, president of the American Civil Liberties Union and law professor at New York Law School, will speak at both ceremonies May 15. Strossen has written, lectured and practiced extensively in the areas of constitutional law, civil liberties and international human rights.

* Sunday, May 16, 10 a.m., bachelor's and master's degrees in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences; Schools of Education, Human Ecology, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy; and the Institute for Environmental Studies. Speaking will be Elzie Higginbottom, UW-Madison alumnus (B.S. '65), now a Chicago real estate entrepreneur who has distinguished himself by improving city neighborhoods.

* Sunday, May 16, 2 p.m., bachelor's and master's degrees in the College of Engineering and School of Business. Jim Berbee, owner of the Madison-based Berbee Information Networks Corporation and a triple graduate (B.S. '85, M.S. '87 and M.B.A. '89) of the UW-Madison, will speak.
