Newswise — Dozens of the country's brightest young legal minds will converge at the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore this week to make their case for being the best trial team in the nation. The National Institute for Trial Advocacy's 20th annual Tournament of Champions " beginning Thursday, Oct. 30, and running through Saturday, Nov. 1 " offers a chance to see some of the next generation of great courtroom advocates demonstrating their courtroom skills while they are still in law school.

Each year, the NITA tournament brings the nation's top 16 law school trial teams together to compete for the national championship. The invitations to compete are based on a three-year performance record at the National Trial Competition and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America's National Student Trial Advocacy Competition, and performances at prior Tournament of Champions competitions. It's a fun combination of the intelligence and quick thinking needed by trial attorneys combined with the pressure and competitiveness of, say, a collegiate basketball tournament. The winning team will be crowned Saturday night at a ceremony in Westminster Hall, adjacent to the School of Law.

The competing law schools are: Baylor Law School, Duquesne University School of Law, Chicago-Kent College of Law, Loyola Law School Los Angeles, Pepperdine University School of Law, Samford University Cumberland School of Law, South Texas College of Law, St. John's University School of Law, Suffolk University College of Law, Syracuse University College of Law, Temple University Beasley School of Law, University of Akron School of Law, University of Arkansas/LR Bowen School of Law, University of Maryland School of Law, University of New Mexico School of Law, and University of North Carolina School of Law.

The University of Maryland School of Law team earned "home-courtroom" advantage by winning the national title two years ago, thus securing the competition for Baltimore.

To give the event a proper kickoff, the school will hold a pep rally at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the lobby of the law school building at 500 W. Baltimore St.
