Trinity College to Operate Dream Camp This Summer for Hartford Children

Trinity College in Hartford, Ct., will offer 100 Hartford-area school children between the ages of six and eight the opportunity to participate at no cost in a unique, five-week summer camp experience at Trinity's campus this year and for the next two consecutive summers. "Dream Camp" will be staffed by Trinity students and local teachers from Hartford and operated by ESF Summer Camps, a leader in children's summer camps, with operations in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. The free camp experience is being made possible through the generosity of an anonymous Trinity alumnus.

Under the program, eligible children must attend Hartford public or parochial school and be nominated by their teachers based on merit, character, personal accomplishment, and financial need. Unlike typical summer camps that are limited in duration, Dream Camp seeks to make a lifelong impact on each child by providing ongoing enrollment in the camp as well as continued mentoring by Trinity students throughout the school year. After attending Dream Camp for three years, campers will embark upon a week-long trip to Wyoming where they will back-pack, hike, ride horses, and rock-climb.

"We're delighted to open our facilities and make the talents and skills of both our students and Hartford teachers available to children in this city who might otherwise never have a chance for this kind of valuable learning experience," said Trinity College President Evan S. Dobelle. "Dream Camp is so compatible with the fundamental objectives of Trinity's neighborhood revitalization initiative and our basic educational mission. We are indebted to the graduate of the College whose generosity is allowing this exciting program to be offered to needy and deserving kids."

"Children who participate in Dream Camp learn the fundamentals of a variety of sports through skill-based instruction as well as arts and crafts, creative and performing arts, and cultural awareness activities," said Michael Rouse, executive director of ESF Summer Camps. "In addition, campers will be introduced to the medieval sport of fencing, learn about the Native American Indian tribes indigenous to New England, and explore the culture and history of Hartford. We believe the Dream Camp experience will leave an indelible mark on each child."

Dream Camp will operate from June 29 through July 31, weekdays, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with an extended program available to 5:30 p.m.
