Newswise — Results of the annual Arkansas Poll typically illuminate Arkansas' bellwether tendencies. This year, the poll collected responses from twice as many Arkansans as usual, allowing the pollsters to draw parallels with swing states in the Southeast and the Midwest and to examine results for each of the state's four congressional districts.

Janine Parry, director of the Arkansas Poll, will announce results of the 10th annual poll in a news conference to be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23. At the end of Parry's presentation, there will be 30 minutes for questions from reporters. Off-site reporters may call in their questions to 479-575-5368.

The press conference and question-and-answer session will be available through satellite uplink.

The poll includes questions about the performance of public figures as well as opinions and preferences in the presidential election. Among the issues included in the poll questions are immigration, gas and oil drilling and the Iraq war. The poll also will question voters about their preferences in state ballot measures, including a measure to prohibit unmarried individuals and same-sex couples from being foster parents.

With 10 years of data behind her, Parry is able to consider current data in the context of patterns and directions in the opinions of Arkansans and in some cases to compare Arkansas and national data. Parry and colleague Pearl Ford will be able to report what percentage of voters and what demographic groups would have voted for Clinton and how some voters may have been influenced by race.

In addition to directing the Arkansas Poll, Parry and colleagues recently completed a study of state polls across the nation. Parry comments frequently in print and broadcast media on results and insights pulled from 10 years of polling data in Arkansas, appearing on CBS Evening News last year to discuss results of the 2007 Arkansas Poll.

Parry is an associate professor of political science in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. A full summary report of the 2008 poll results and data from past Arkansas Polls will be available at http://new-www3.uark.edu/ARKPoll/ after the news conference.

The Arkansas Poll is funded by the Diane D. Blair Center of Southern Politics and Society.
