BAKER INSTITUTE PREPARES FOR COMPREHENSIVE IRAQ COVERAGE HOUSTON, Feb. 19, 1998 -- If hostilities break out in Iraq, Rice's James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy will open its International Conference Facility (ICF) for a specified period of time to provide local, regional, national and international media outlets expert analysis of events. The ICF in Baker Hall on the Rice campus will offer satellite uplink capabilities and dedicated phone lines for radio interviews and for wire service writers to file reports. Also, live coverage of breaking events will be broadcast over television monitors in the ICF to keep the media apprised of any developments in Iraq or Washington, D.C.

In addition to technical operations, Baker Institute sources for reporters will include institute director Edward Djerejian, former assistant secretary of state for the Near East, and U.S. ambassador to Israel and Syria; Ric Stoll, assistant director of the institute and a political science professor at Rice dealing with American foreign policy; and Amy Jaffe, an institute researcher on energy industry issues, particularly in the Middle East.

Interview requests should be coordinated with Michael Cinelli, director of the Rice University News Office. He can be reached at (713) 831-4794 (office), (281) 589-2858 (home), (713) 318-1542 (pager), or (713) 416-7423 (cell phone).

Total Video of Houston will coordinate satellite connections and facilities from Baker Hall. Contact Helen Burns of Total Video at (713) 223-8989 for uplink information.

Local television outlets sending live trucks to campus should notify Cinelli in the News Office in order to secure parking space close to Baker Hall.

Baker Institute media briefings will be open to all media outlets and will be available on the World Wide Web through the use of RealAudio/RealVideo, which can be accessed through the Rice University News Office Web site at http://www.rice.ed/ricenews.

Tapes of any briefings will be available to national television outlets through Total Video as soon as a briefing ends.
