Tasha Lewis is a professor of fiber science and apparel design at Cornell University’s College of Human Ecology, where she specializes in global and domestic apparel production issues and the significance of social responsibility in the global apparel supply chain. She comments following this week’s deadly fire in a Bangladesh clothing factory as the death toll passes 1,000 and continues to rise from the Rana Plaza building collapse in April.

Lewis says:

“This factory collapse is a tragedy that is definitely sending shock waves through the industry. Transparency in the apparel supply chain is a huge concern and unlike food, has a complex network of suppliers and contractors and sub-contractors. Some apparel companies are moving into full disclosure of their suppliers and this horrible event may create more urgency for other companies to take action.”
