James Gross, workplace rights expert and professor at Cornell’s ILR School reacts to President Obama’s plan to suspend Bangladesh trade privileges for labor safety and labor rights violations. Gross says such bans should be extended to the United States’ major trading partners.

Gross says: “It’s encouraging to see human rights become an integral part of our foreign policy. However, sometimes we are bolder in the promotion of human rights in cases where economic trade is not that significant.

“The real test would be the extent to which human rights can trump economic profit when it involves some of our major trading partners.”
