Newswise — President Barack Obama has chosen Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, as his first stop after his State of the Union address this week.

He will speak to students, faculty and the public Wednesday afternoon.

“We are honored and excited to host President Obama here at Boise State,” university president Bob Kustra said. “We know he will be impressed with our students and faculty and the innovative work and world-class research they are doing.”

The White House announced that the president planned to discuss the themes from his upcoming State of the Union address at Boise State and in Lawrence, Kansas, in the days following the Tuesday speech.

This is Obama’s second trip to the Boise State campus — though his first as sitting president. In his 2008 campaign, he spoke to more than 14,000 people in Taco Bell Arena.

Boise State is a university that constantly surprises, not only on its Blue Turf, but also in its classrooms and research labs. A contrast to more traditional universities, Boise State is young and agile, adapting educational practices to changing student dynamics and employer demands for the skills and competencies required by the marketplace.

Most people know Boise State for its famous Blue field and its giant-slayer football team — and the Broncos did just win their third Fiesta Bowl in less than a decade. But the innovation and excitement you see on the field has propelled the academic mission onto a trajectory that has distinguished its faculty and students.

The most recent example of this entrepreneurial spirit is the new College of Innovation and Design, a university-wide hub that will leverage the speed, collaboration and risk-taking of a start-up to re-imagine the way we teach, learn and conduct research at Boise State. Teams of faculty will cross traditional disciplinary boundaries to create new degrees and certificates, paving ways to learning that are more in sync with employer requirements for the workforce of tomorrow.

Boise State serves more than 22,000 students pursuing 84 undergraduate majors, 76 master’s degrees and 9 doctorates. The university awarded more than 3,800 degrees last year — the most in Idaho.
