Book on "E-vangelism" discusses saving souls in cyberspace

ROLLA, Mo. -- Saving souls in cyberspace is the subject of a new book, "E-vangelism: Sharing the Gospel in Cyberspace," by Andrew Careaga of the University of Missouri-Rolla. The book was published recently by Vital Issues Press, an imprint of Huntington House Publishers of Lafayette, La.

Careaga is manager of public relations at UMR, a freelance writer and a volunteer youth pastor with a keen interest in how organizations and individuals use new technologies to spread their ideas. Noting that religious groups have frequently taken advantage of new media to get their messages to the masses, Careaga explores how Christians are using the Internet to communicate their faith.

"In the Great Commission," Careaga writes in the book's introduction, "Jesus told His followers to 'make disciples of all the nations,' then sent them out into the world to share His message of salvation. Today, after nearly 2,000 years of Christian outreach, we have a chance to share that same message in a new way, through a new medium."

The Internet world of chat rooms, Web sites, electronic mail and newsgroup forums "has the potential to unleash a worldwide revival," Careaga says.

"Already, many Christians have discovered the power of this new medium and are heeding God's call to go out into the world and be fishers on the Net."

"E-vangelism" focuses on how churches, parachurch organizations and individuals are using the Internet to communicate their theology to the online world. "A lot of churches, parachurch ministries and devout believers see cyberspace as a new mission field," Careaga says. "They're using the Internet as a tool to get their message out, and it seems to be working."

In addition to his duties as manager of public relations at UMR, Careaga is news and features editor for the school's quarterly alumni magazine, the MSM-UMR Alumnus. He also is a volunteer youth pastor at Salem Faith Assembly Church in Salem, Mo.

Careaga has written extensively on computers and technology for the Christian magazines Charisma and Ministries Today. In July, he will begin writing a column on the topic of "e-vangelism" for the online version of Christian Computing Magazine (www.ccmag.com).
