Military operations in Iraq will require the movement and management of large numbers of troops, equipment and support personnel. Keith Womer, director of the Hearin Center for Enterprise Science at the University of Mississippi, is helping military leaders develop effective management strategies for such operations as principal investigator for the Mississippi Consortium for Military Personnel Research.

The consortium, established with a $3.8 million contract from the Office of Naval Research, also includes the University of Memphis and Kansas State University. More than 45 faculty members at the three institutions are conducting 25 projects on an array of personnel and management issues.

The largest consortium project is a $1.3 million study to streamline operations such as personnel assignment scheduling and vehicle routing within a massive distribution network.
