Rev. Martin X. Moleski, S.J., Jesuit priest and professor of religious studies and theology at Canisius College, says "I am stunned at the courage of the Cardinals in choosing not only a non-European but a Jesuit. The Hispanic members of the Church are very large in number, very faithful and I’m sure they are very happy and consoled by having one of their own in the Papacy – just as I am happy and consoled at having one of our Jesuits in the Papacy. The choice of the name, Francis, is inspiring, honoring not only Francis of Assisi but St. Francis Xavier, one of the greatest Jesuit saints.”
Rev. Patrick J. Lynch, S.J., Jesuit priest and chair of religious studies and theology at Canisius College, says “I am very proud, pleased and excited to be a Jesuit. Pope Francis is a man of the people, someone who will serve the faith and pursue justice. I believe, in particular, that Pope Francis will be a robust defender of the people on the margins of society and that he will work to help them better their lives.”
