Newswise — Dr. Julie Louise Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, will deliver the commencement address at the Medical College of Georgia May 12 at 2 p.m. in the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.

Dr. Gerberding is former acting deputy director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases, where she played a major role in the CDC's response to the anthrax attacks in 2001. She joined CDC in 1998 as director of the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, National Center for Infectious Diseases, where she developed the CDC's patient safety initiatives and other programs to prevent infections, antimicrobial resistance and medical errors in health care settings.

MCG will confer diplomas to 665 health sciences students during the ceremony.

Coinciding with commencement will be year-end ceremonies for each of MCG's five schools. The School of Allied Health Sciences will hold an honors ceremony May 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church, 1330 Monte Sano Ave.

The School of Dentistry will hold a hooding ceremony May 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Augusta's First Baptist Church, 3500 Walton Way. A luncheon will follow in the church's Activities Center.

The School of Graduate Studies will hold a hooding ceremony May 12 at 8 a.m. at Warren Baptist Church, 3203 Washington Rd.

The School of Medicine will hold a hooding ceremony May 11 at 2 p.m. at Augusta's Bell Auditorium, 712 Tefair St. A reception will follow at the National Science Center's Fort Discovery.

The School of Nursing will hold an honors convocation May 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Bell Auditorium.
