Newswise — To help the media answer questions about the tragedy at Virginia Tech, Cornell University is offering psychology experts that specialize in identifying potential mental health problems in a student population and school violence.

The experts are:Ellen DeLara, Cornell visiting professor. Her research interests include school safety and school violence issues, school climate, adolescent development, child maltreatment, rural education, and marriage and family functioning. She has co-authored two books with James Garbarino And Words Can Hurt Forever: How to Protect Adolescents from Bullying, Harassment, and Emotional Violence (Simon and Schuster/ The Free Press, 2002) and School-based Intervention Programs, (Houghton-Mifflin, 2003.) DeLara has a private practice in Ithaca.

Gregory Eells, Director, Cornell's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and Tim Marchell, Cornell's Director of Mental Health Initiatives. Cornell is educating faculty, staff and students to recognize the signs of emotional distress and where to turn for help. The CAPS center has been providing on-going free "Let's Talk" walk-in hours around campus. The center has provided same-day phone assessments. The Cornell faculty monitor patterns of academic problems.
