Newswise — Darden Executive Education has announced the launch of two new 2011 programs designed to propel individuals and organizations to extraordinary new levels. Leading Teams for Growth and Change – San Diego offering, and True Leadership: Leading With Meaning have been added to the leadership and change portfolio at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.

The inaugural offering of the open-enrollment program Leading Teams for Growth and Change ran last spring in Charlottesville, and was attended by executives from Merrill Lynch & Co Inc., Hoeganaes Corporation, Porsche Cars NA, Northrop Grumman, Hollins University, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Student Clearinghouse, and different units within the U.S. military branches. To provide the opportunity for more companies to participate in this high-engagement, experiential learning course, Executive Education created a West Coast offering, which will run February 21-25, 2011. The program, led by Darden professor Lynn Isabella, uses rowing as a teaching tool and partners with Olympic gold medalist Dan Lyons, who rowed on seven U.S. national teams.

“When you are in a boat of eight, sitting backwards with no way to see where you are headed, you must come quickly to trust the skills and competencies of your fellow rowers, the leadership of the stroke and the strategy of those who can see forward,” says Isabella. “Rowing is a metaphor for what managers and leaders face every day."

The East Coast offerings of the course will run at Darden May 23-27 and August 8-12, 2011.

True Leadership: Leading With Meaning will be led by Darden Professor Ed Freeman and CEO, Executive Education, David Newkirk, in Charlottesville from May 9-13. This program will study a leader in action, recognizing and addressing organizational and personal challenges. The group will address the difference between management and leadership, and explore the need to reset both personal leadership and organizational strategies in order to move forward.

“This seminar views business and leadership as an intrinsically human phenomenon and will provide participants with the critical tools to tackle the overwhelming changes that are affecting business,” says Freeman.

Offering perception exercises and simulation, this interactive program will help participants gain an understanding of the extent to which they are leading versus managing.
