Newswise — Former U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle will deliver one of the two commencement addresses and receive an honorary doctorate during South Dakota State University's spring commencement exercises Saturday, April 30. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in Frost Arena, with a pre-commencement concert beginning at 9:30 a.m. The public is invited. The ceremonies may also be viewed on Brookings Cable Channel 2.

Honorary marshals are Dr. Madeleine Andrawis and Dr. Alfred Andrawis, both professors of electrical engineering.

Robbi Pritchard will be recognized as distinguished professor of animal and range sciences. Carol Wake, associate professor of biology, and James Clem, professor of clinical pharmacy, will each receive the Edward Patrick Hogan Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Daschle will receive the honorary doctor of public service degree and deliver the commencement address "Pioneers for a New Age."

Graduating senior Laura Lynn Geraets will also deliver a commencement address, entitled "Joy, Struggle, Preparation, Elevation " Reflections of Four Years at SDSU."

Music will be provided by the SDSU Symphonic Band under the direction of James McKinney.

The conferring of degrees and presentation of diplomas will be conducted by SDSU President Peggy Gordon Miller and the college deans. Also taking part in the program will be Carol J. Peterson, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs; Lt. Col. John Holter of Army ROTC; Lt. Col. Craig Bond of Air Force ROTC; Terry Nelson, Alumni Association president; James O. Hansen of the Board of Regents; David Hilderbrand, dean of the Graduate School; and Joel Hefling, chair of the Academic Senate.
