Newswise — Some 58 accounting and other business majors in Saint Joseph's Haub School of Business are helping elderly and low- to middle-income community residents prepare their tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program.

According to Accounting Professor W. Richard Sherman, Ph.D., site coordinator for VITA at Saint Joseph's, the SJU program is the largest university-based VITA site in the Delaware Valley and this year student volunteers are expected to help some 200 clients. In addition to seeing first-hand the practical application of their textbook knowledge of tax law, the students reap the returns of hands-on, real world experience and a feeling of giving back to the community, says Sherman.
