Newswise — Approximately 14,000 education researchers will attend the 87th Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in San Francisco, California, April 7 to April 11, 2006. Reflecting on the meeting theme, "Education Research in the Public Interest," AERA President Gloria Ladson-Billings says:

We are living in an era where there is an increasing retreat from all things public—public health, public housing, public transportation, and even public schooling—in favor of privatization. Education researchers are positioned to help reinvigorate the discourse and the investment in the public good by offering research and scholarship that directly look at education and the public.

Education researchers from across the United States and international representatives from 48 countries will discuss findings in more than 4,000 peer-reviewed presentations. The Annual Meeting Program, searchable by presenter name, affiliation, and session/presentation (keyword) is posted online at http://www.aera.net for use as a year-round resource for story topics and expert sources.

Featured speakers include:

Gloria J. Ladson-Billings, AERA President, 2006 Presidential Address

Donna E. Shalala, President, University of Miami, AERA Distinguished Lecture
