Newswise — When the American Educational Research Association (AERA) holds its Annual Meeting April 11 to 15 in Montreal, scholars will present research findings that illuminate three converging trends in education: increasing diversity among students, increasing tension regarding the role of education in a democracy, and increasing accountability through testing.

More than 12,000 education researchers from the United States, Canada and abroad are expected to attend this 86th annual meeting, which has as its theme Demography and Democracy in the Era of Accountability.

Keynote speakers include AERA President Marilyn Cochran-Smith of Boston College, describing the new teacher education; Kenneth Prewitt, former director of the U.S. Census Bureau and now at Columbia University, highlighting demography and democracy; and Barbara R. Foorman, Commissioner for Education Research at the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences, outlining research designs to address pressing educational questions.

In a special session on April 14, education ministers for Canada's two largest provinces will give an overview of their government's efforts to improve education. The Honorable Gerard Kennedy, Minister of Education in Ontario, and the Honorable Jean-Marc Fournier, Minister of Education in Quebec, will outline priorities and strategies in light of the larger political and economic context. Pascal D. Forgione, Jr., the former U.S. Commissioner of Education Statistics who now serves as superintendent of the Austin, Texas, Independent School District, will comment.

Nearly 2,000 peer-reviewed presentations are scheduled. The complete program is posted on the AERA website: http://www.aera.net ; it may be searched by author's name, key word, or affiliation.
