Ethics in the workplace has been a hot topic for the past two years. A new study co-authored by UAB management professor George Munchus, Ph.D., and recently published in the journal Women in Management Review found that the choices women make at work are more frequently guided by ethics, or the company's set of principles and guidelines.

Men, on the other hand, tended to make decisions based on what they perceived to be the moral, or right, thing to do.

"Men are more likely to make decisions on their gut reaction, while women will look for guidelines." Prime examples are the recent upsets at Enron and WorldCom. Male employees were aware of Securities and Exchange Commission and company accounting violations, "but it was the women who blew the whistle."
