Newswise —

What: Ever wonder what it was like to live in Maryland over the last 200 years? What was your life like if you were an engineer, governor, mother, warrior, teacher? What impact did your life have at the time and on future generations? A new exhibit at the University of Maryland's Hornbake Library tries to answer these questions and more by presenting the lives of eight Marylanders through their own writings, other published materials, photographs and memorabilia.

In the Parlor: The Personal Lives of Marylanders considers how these lives reflected larger historical themes that range from religion to race, politics to careers and family life."This is a great way to learn that even the most simple records and diaries, combined with official records and other documents can provide a look into the lives of individuals," says exhibit Curator Jennie Levine. "There is no better way to learn about past history in a very personal way," she says.
